Google Earth: To convert files to KML/KMZ for Google Earth, you might want to try GPS Visualizer's Google Earth input form, which has more options than GPSBabel. (My GPS file converter can also read human-created plain-text input files more easily than GPSBabel.) GPS Visualizer's utility has these advantages: a simpler interface the ability to add estimated elevation (via SRTM and USGS data), speed, course, slope, and/or distance fields and CSV or tab-delimited text output which is more user-friendly than GPSBabel's. NOTE: For many input formats - including GPX, OziExplorer, LOC, Garmin Forerunner, Cetus GPS, IGC, and more (including some that GPSBabel can't read, like NetStumbler binary files) - you can also convert your GPS files to plain text, GPX, or Google Earth KML with GPS Visualizer's conversion tool. Of course, you can't use this page to communicate with your GPS receiver - and a few of GPSBabel's more advanced options (filters and custom XCSV files) aren't included. You can download it and run it on almost any computer, but its command-line interface requires some getting used to - so I've created this on-line gateway that lets you access a copy of gpsbabel running on. GPSBabel is a freeware program that converts GPS data from one format to another. Well, I could sum up with these questions:ġ) How can I easily export Google Earth paths into GC - easily means NOT with a web-based converter-tool?Ģ) If I want to use gpsbabel, is it possible to make it insert timestamps? (I know they will be more or less random, but as long as it works. No ads? No problem! You can support GPS Visualizer by making a donation with PayPal instead.Įnglish Dutch French German Italian Norwegian Portuguese Spanish Which file format in gpsbabelgui corresponds to the shapefile I dont see shape or ESRI shapefile listed in the list of available input or output file formats. When removing these timestamp, I get the same error as with the GPX file obtained by gpsbabel. I have been able to convert shape files to gpx using the -i shape directive in the command line, but would like to use the GPSbabelgui interface to convert shapefiles to gpx. While comparing the output GPX files (the working and non-working, respectively), I notice, that in the working edition (from gpsies) timestamps are inserted for each trackpoint. Also it seems, that other people talk well about gpsbabel, so I guess it should be possible. After plugging the GPS device, use your file browser and navigate to your gpx files on the device, and dragndrop them into the map canvas of QGIS. They are already stored as gpx-files on the device. With a GPSmap 62, you do not have to use gpsbabel at all to download your data. Finally, give the output a file name and click the Save button of the 'Output File Name' dialog. I think the instruction you followed were meant for 'old' GPS devices. Then click on the 'File Name' button and navigate to the folder in which you want the output to be placed. But the BIG drawback is, that it is webbased - I don't like that. For the 'Output', select File and use the down-arrow at the right of the Format field to fiind 'GPX XML'. This will probably be a GPSBabel command, but you can use any. I've tried to use another tool for the conversion - and opposed to gpsbabel it works perfect. The download command is the command that is used to download data from the device to a GPX file. Gpsbabel -i kml -o gpx,gpxver=1.1 HOTCUP1.kml HOTCUP1.gpx Notice that this is not a full scale XML schema conversion. The only other valid value for this option is 1.1. The default version is 1.0 unless one or more of the input files is GPX 1.1, then it's 1.1. I've tried to save it as KML and using gpsbabel to convert into GPX but GC won't accept it, and gives "Some activities could not be created." This option specifies the version of the GPX specification to use for output. How can I easily export a path (course) created in Google Earth into Garmin Connect.
